      Two GPS trackers were amongst the string of pods carried by a high altitude balloon and parachute flight system sent up Saturday October 24, 2009 by engineering students at the University of Southern Indiana. The GPS signals were lost shortly before landing, so the students knew approximatley where to look. In this case they wisely checked the nearby trees and discovered the downed pods, parachuite and balloon remnant 12 minutes after landing.

      Engineering students from the University of Southern Indiana (Evansville, IN) can be seen attempting to stabilize a weather balloon as it is being filled in preparation for a flight to carry experimental pods into the stratosphere. The balloon was launched on Saturday October 24, 2009 from the Mt. Vernon, IL Airport where this helium fill and stabilization took place. The balloon rose to 90000 feet, burst, and then the pods descended, eventually slowed by a parachute for landing in eastern Daviess County, IN.

      With several critical pods, the parachute and the balloon remnant still tangled in upper branches, local neighbors called in Daviess-Martin REMC to make the final extraction after USI's third high altitude balloon flight landed in an oak tree in eastern Daviess County, IN. The flight took place on Saturday October 24, 2009.
